A bedroom is a place to sleep, dress and get out safely in a fire. What makes a room legally a bedroom is the escape window and the smoke alarm, not the closet.

What makes a bedroom?

A bedroom is defined by safety and comfort: a way out, an alarm, light, air and heat. Closets are expected by buyers, but they're not what makes it a bedroom in code.

No escape window, no bedroom.
